identity of Panama,” Pope Benedict XVI told Panama’s new Ambassador to the Holy
See - Mrs. Delia Càrdenas Christie. when she presented her Letters of Credence on
Friday. The Pope praised the notable presence of the Church in education and in
assisting the poor, the sick, prisoners and migrants, and in defending key aspects
such as commitment to social justice, combating corruption, work for peace, the sanctity
of human life from conception until natural death, and safeguarding the family based
on marriage between a man and a woman. The Pope said these are irreplaceable elements
to create a strong society based on the strength of moral values. Acknowledging
the commitment that Panamanian authorities have repeatedly expressed to strengthen
democratic institutions and a public life founded on strong ethical pillars, the Pope
urged the country to spare no efforts to promote an efficient and independent legal
system, to bring about a just and fraternal society. Pope Benedict told Panama’s
new ambassador that the and the Holy See has a high regard and esteem for the role
the country is playing for peaceful coexistence among people of diverse backgrounds,
and he encouraged the people of Panama to work for greater social equality and economic
and cultural cooperation between the various sectors of society.
