Pope Benedict Sends Message to Mark World Food Day
(16 Oct 09 - RV) Pope Benedict XVI today sent a message to the Director General of
the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization to mark the October 16th
recurrence of World Food Day, which recalls the founding of the FAO. In his Message,
the Holy Father says World Food Day celebrates FAO’s action to combat hunger and malnutrition,
and also stresses the urgent need to intervene on behalf of all those who are deprived
of daily bread in many countries due to lack of adequate food security conditions.
The message goes on to say that access to food is a fundamental right of individuals
and peoples, and that the Catholic Church promotes, supports and participates in efforts
to enable all peoples and communities have the necessary resources to ensure an adequate
