(01 Oct 09 - RV) The United States will hold direct talks with Iran at a meeting in
Geneva today, along with France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China. The US and
its Western allies have made clear they will focus on Iran's disputed nuclear programme,
which they suspect is aimed at making bombs. Washington has suggested possible
new sanctions on banking and the oil and gas industry if Iran, fails to assuage Western
fears it seeks nuclear weapons. But Mark Fitzpatrick, a senior fellow for non-proliferation
