(12 Sept 09 - RV) President Robert Mugabe welcomed the first top-level European Union
delegation to visit Zimbabwe in seven years with "open arms" today and said talks
on implementing a power-sharing deal went well. The visit by the EU Aid and Development
Commissioner and the Swedish EU presidency is the first since the EU began targeted
sanctions in 2002 against members of Mugabe's government for human rights violations. At
a meeting earlier this week, Southern Africa's regional body SADC said that continuing sanctions
will make it difficult for Zimbabwe's power-sharing agreement to be implemented. But
spokesperson for London’s Zimbabwe Vigil, Dennis Benton, says that despite Mugabe’s
warm reception of the EU delegation, he has no intention of implementing rule of law
in his country…
