(September 4, 2009) In India, a Catholic bishop met the new governor of Uttar Pradesh
state last week and apprised him on the Church’s efforts, especially in the field
of education, healthcare and social development. Bishop Gerald Mathias of Lucknow
called on Governor B.L. Joshi at the Raj Bhavan presidential residence in the city
on August 27. At the meeting, the governor showed keen interest in the work of the
Catholic Church in Uttar Pradesh through its educational institutions, schools for
the differently abled and social development centres. Joshi also appreciated the
role of religious leaders in forming the civil society towards a right value system
for state and nation-building. Bishop Mathias apprised him of the various areas that
needed the urgent attention of the government and the civil society, especially corruption
at different levels. Joshi, a former police officer, has previously served as governor
of Meghalaya and Uttarkhand, and takes keen interest in social work and is also associated
with several social service groups and agencies.
