(17 Aug 09 - RV) In Sri Lanka, in recent days more than 100,000 pilgrims have visited
the Shrine of our Lady of Madhu located in Mannar, the heart of the island’s former
conflict zone. This is the first time since 2005 that the government has given
permission for Catholics to visit the shrine in such large numbers. During their
sermon yesterday, the Archbishop of Colombo and the Bishop of Jaffna both condemned
the continued detention of almost 300,000 tamil refugees in camps close to the shrine. The
