An Indian, among six Asian winners of Ramon Magsaysay Award


(Aug.05,2009): An Indian is among the six winners from Asia, who will receive the 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Award on Aug.31 in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. India’s winner Deep Joshi, is being awarded for "his vision and leadership, in bringing professionalism to the NGO movement in India, by effectively combining 'head and heart' in the transformative development of rural communities."
The Board of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation – RMAF announced the winners on Tuesday. It noted that the winners "exemplify the greatness of spirit and leadership in a society in continual change, and represent a positive difference for the countries of origin."
The Award popularly known as the Asian Nobel Prize, is named after Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957) who was the third president of the Philippines. His life and his example had a considerable influence at home and abroad. The award dedicated to his memory was created in 1958, a year after his death. The other winners of the Ramon Magsaysay Award hail from Thailand, Myanmar the Philippines and two from China.
