Path to Peace award 2009 to be awarded to late Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho.
(June, 02,2009):The 2009 Path to Peace Award will be posthumously awarded to Iraqi
Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho of Mosul on June 9 at the UN headquarters in New York.
The news was announced by Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Permanent Observer of the
Holy See to the United Nations, and President of the Path to Peace Foundation. The
prelate said the decision was made by the Board of the Peace Foundation, an agency
established to carry out projects to support the work of the Holy See Mission to
the UN. Archbishop Rahho encouraged tolerance among all factions. On Feb. 29,
2008, gunmen kidnapped the prelate outside his church in Mosul. After two weeks of
searching, church officials were informed that the Archbishop had died and where
to find his body. It is in the context of the debate on inter-cultural and inter-religious
dialogue currently taking place at the UN, that the Path to Peace Foundation wished
to recognize his precious testimony and promote everywhere in the world the fundamental
right to religious freedom.
