(01 June 09 - RV) It has been a fortnight since Sri Lanka declared victory over a
Tamil Tiger insurgency. 26 years of fighting has killed tens of thousands of people
and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The civilians now reside in various government-run
camps that are criticized for their poor health and sanitation conditions. The
UN Children’s Fund is working to assist the displaced civilians by supplying water,
constructing latrines and  building and temporary learning shelters, but UNICEF Sri
Lanka Spokesperson James Elder says that the government plans to resettle most of
the civilians within the next six months:
