(April, 02, 2009): Pope Benedict XVI told the bishops of Argentina that priests have
the great responsibility to be perfect witnesses of good conduct before the faithful
and recommended prayer, comprehension and spiritual affection between the priests
and the faithful. The Pope spoke on Thursday to the bishops, who are on their ad limina
visit to Rome. Such visits are made by bishops every five years to report on their
dioceses. The Pope told the bishops that in many parts of the world, including
in Argentina, there is the urgent need to carry out an extensive and incisive evangelizing
action, taking into account the Christian values that have shaped the history and
culture of the country, thus bringing about the spiritual rebirth and morale of the
communities and of the entire society. Reminding the bishops that the first form
of evangelization is the witness of one’s life, Pope Benedict said the challenges
of today require ever more virtuous priests with a solid background, and dedicated
totally to the service of Christ and his church.
