“Poor must not be forgotten,”says Secy. General of Caritas Internationalis.
(Jan.27,2009): “The poor must not be forgotten in the economic crises,” is the message
that Caritas Internationalis, Secretary-General Lesley Anne Knight will give to
the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. World leaders and policy makers will
gather in large numbers from Jan. 28 to Feb.1st at the annual Davos Forum,
to discuss how to overcome the worst global economic crises in 80 years. Caritas
Internationalis is the worldwide federation of 162 national Catholic charities working
on humanitarian relief, development and peace building. The Secretary-General of Caritas
Internationalis said - “The current global crises will dominate discussions at Davos.
I am concerned that the Millennium Development Goals – the series of UN anti-poverty
targets for 2015 will be shelved for the duration of the economic recession, and
I want to point out that ending global poverty is not a luxury but a duty”. He said
“ Climate change is another important issue that we will be discussing at Davos,
and I want to ensure that the interests of the poor, who are those most affected by
climate change, are given a high priority. It is appalling that in 2009, we still
have much suffering in the world as a result of poverty”, he added.
