Migrants Break Out of Reception Centre in Italy

(24 Jan 09 - RV) Hundreds of asylum-seekers and would-be immigrants burst out of an Italian reception centre on the island of Lampedusa today and marched to the town hall. The incident occurred just a day after the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees criticised the overcrowded conditions at the camp, which holds people retrieved while trying to cross the Mediterranean in small boats. UNHCR Spokesperson Laura Boldrini says the transfer of asylum seekers may have already began.
