(05 Jan 09 - RV) Sri Lankan troops captured a strategic Tamil Tiger-held town today
and moved closer toa key rebel base in their offensive aimed at crushing the LTTE
and ending the 25-year-old civil war. Government forces have won a string of victories
over the rebels in recent months, forcing them to withdraw from much of the de facto
state they once controlled in the north. Jehan Perera is the director of the national
Peace Council of Sri Lanka. He told us that if the government defeats the LTTE,
it will not resolve the underlying ethnic conflict and peace talks need to continue...
