Jaffna Bishop lauds Indian Aid for Displaced People
January 2, 2008) Bishop Thomas Sundaranayagam of Jaffna has written a letter to the
Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka lauding the food assistance India providing to
refugees in the war-torn Island nation. The bishop, who toured the relief camps and
other areas where Sri Lankan army is engaged in a war against LTTE, said what the
Indian government and the Tamil Nadu state do is a “beautiful humanitarian gesture.”
The letter said the food and clothing aid provided by India has reached the most target
families. It also mentions trucks carrying clothes for the internally displaced persons
in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Government had permitted entry to Indian vehicles carrying
aid to the displaced persons only after the intervention by the Indian Government
for the well being of civilians in the fighting areas. India has been calling for
a political settlement for some time now, but the Sri Lankan government has gone ahead
with the military action.
