Pope welcomes new ambassador of Seychelles

(December 19, 2008) Pope Benedict XVI on Friday encouraged the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles in building a sense of social solidarity among the citizens so that all feel responsible for all. The Pope’s advice came in an address he delivered to Seychelles new ambassador to the Holy See, Graziano Luigi Tribaldi, who presented his credentials to the Pope at a formal ceremony in the Vatican. The Pope appreciated the nation’s effort in debt reduction saying the cleaning up the economy is also an issue of social justice towards future generations and the poorest and most vulnerable. This laudable goal, the Pope pointed out, calls for the cooperation of all in the spirit of solidarity. This is both a social as well as moral virtue where each person works for the common good, because all are responsible for all. And the best way to ensure this sense of solidarity is to educate the young, Pope Benedict said, commending Seychelles efforts in improving the quality of education. However, he pointed out that this effort would remain futile if the family was not supported and encouraged by the government. The family and the state can effectively work in deep harmony for a future of prosperity and peace. That is why, the Pope said, the Catholic Church in Seychelles is helping families assume their educational responsibilities and is assisting those in difficulties to overcome them.
