Discourse of Pope Benedict to 11 Ambassadors during the presentation of the Letters
of Accreditation
(December 18, 2008) The diversity of your origins allows me to give thanks to God
for his love as creator and his many gifts that continues to give to humans in an
amazing way, said Pope Benedict XVI. He was speaking to the eleven ambassadors of
Malawi, Sweden, Sierra Leone, Iceland, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Republic
of Madagascar, Belize, Tunisia, the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Bahrain and
the Republic of Fiji, during the presentation of their credentials to the Holy Father
in Vatican on Thursday, 18th of November. The Pope extended his gratitude
to all the civil and religious authorities of their nations and to the people of the
place and said that his prayers and wishes go particularly to the Catholic communities
in their countries where they are anxious to live the Gospel and to testify in a spirit
of fraternal cooperation. Reflecting on the noble mission of Ambassador, the Pope
said that one of the key aspects of its business is research and promotion of peace.
In this context he quoted the Beatitude given by Christ in his Sermon on the Mount:
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the son of God". Ambassador
can and must be a builder of peace. The concept of peace, which is at stake here and
only person in calm and conciliatory temperament, will want to live on good terms
with everyone and if possible avoid conflicts, but also get the gift of peace and
commits himself so actively that sometimes be led to the point of giving his life.
He further added that Peace does not only state policy or non-military conflict, but
generally refers to all the conditions for harmony among all and the lives of working
people. Yet said the Holy Father, You and I know that true peace is possible only
when justice prevails. Our world is thirsty for peace and justice. Finally, The noble
task of the Ambassador is to deploy his art so that everything be "adjusted" to the
nation that it serves not only live in peace with other countries but also justice
that is expressed by equity and solidarity in international relations, and that citizens
enjoy social peace, can live freely and peacefully their beliefs and join the "correctness"
of God, declared Pope Benedict.
