the need for modern society to take a closer look at its morals. In his message
for the World Day of Peace, Pope Benedict calls for a "common code of ethics" in the
global economy to stop the gap between rich and poor widening. While the Vatican’s
new Instruction on Bioethics urges scientists and civil legislators to set moral standards
in research that protect and respect humans. We spoke to Fr Vincent Toomey, professor
emeritus of Moral Theology at Maynooth University in Ireland. He says the insights
