Appointment of members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences


(November 11, 2008) The Holy Father has appointed members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences Professor Govinda Swarup, Professor of Astrophysics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of Mumbai (India) and Professor Stanislas Dehaene, professor of psychology cognitive test at the Collège de France, Paris. Prof.. Govinda Swarup was born in Thakurwara (India) in 1929. He received his Master in Physics at Allahabad University in 1950 and a doctorate from the University of Stanford in 1961. After working at the National Physics Laboratory in New Delhi, the CSIRO in Australia and at Harvard in 1963 was taken at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). E 'was also director of the project Metre wave Giant Radio Telescope (GMRT), professor emeritus at TIFR, Homi Baba Senior Fellow and Honorary Scientist. Prof. Swarup was a pioneer in the field of solar radio astronomy, radio galaxies, the cosmology and instrumentation for radio astronomy. He designed and directed the construction of a cylindrical radio telescope, 530 m long 30 m wide, at Ooty, South in India. Between 1987 and 1997 was dedicated to the design and construction of Metre wave Giant Radio Telescope, the largest radio telescope in the world, operating within a range of frequencies ranging from 130 MHz to 1430 MHz. Prof.. Swarup is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Third World Academy of Sciences, a member of International Academy of Astronautics, and has received numerous awards and international recognition.
