(4 Oct 08 - RV) Burma's military authorities have ordered two news weeklies to temporarily
stop publishing for violating the country's strict press regulations. Authorities
suspended the True News weekly for two months and The Action Times for one month.
Reasons were not given for the suspensions, but it is believed to have stemmed from
an article about the September 23rd release of several political prisoners
in one of the publications, and a photograph showing Burmese children working at a
construction site in neighbouring Thailand in the other. Director of the Burma
Campaign UK, Anna Roberts, told us that the government requires all articles to go
through a censorship process prior to publication.
