“Build a world of solidarity, peace & freedom” says Pope’s message to UN
(Sept.16, 2008):- Pope Benedict XVI prayed that God give guidance and strength to
the United Nations to carry out the urgent tasks facing it in the coming months, and
all its initiatives aimed at ensuring that the whole Human Family shares in the benefits
of globalization. The Pope’s prayerful greetings were sent in a message on Monday,
to all those taking part in the prayer service on the eve of the 63rd session
of the UN General Assembly. The message was sent in the Pope’s name by Vatican
Secretary of State – Cardinal Tarciscio Bertone. It was read at the UN’s Ecumenical
Service by Holy See’s Permanent Observer at the UN – Archbishop Celestino Migliore
. The prayer service was held in the Church of the Holy Family in New York.. The
message also recalled the Pontiff’s visit to the UN General Assembly last April,
on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, and renewed the Pope’s appeal to the international leaders, to reappropriate
the lofty moral vision and the transcendent principles of justice embodied in the
United Nations founding documents. The papal message concluded with a prayerful
blessing on all those attending the service, that God may guide them to uphold the
human dignity of each human person and build a world of ever greater solidarity, freedom
and peace.
