Archbishop Saldhana Hopeful for Pakistan's President
(09 Sept 08-RV) Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto,
was sworn into office today as Pakistan’s new president, completing a return to civilian
rule. The inauguration follows his sweeping victory in presidential election by legislators
on Saturday when he won 481 out of a possible 702 votes. Zardari now faces the immediate
task of cracking down on Islamic militants and address daunting economic problems.
In addition to these pressing issues, The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference
of Pakistan and Archbishop of Lahore Lawrence John Saldanha told us that the
Catholic community has asked the new president to give urgent attention to religious
tolerance.
