(04 Aug 08 - RV) The leader of South Africa’s governing African National Congress
party, Jacob Zuma, appeared in High Court today in an attempt to have corruption charges
against him dropped.
The case is likely to decide whether the ANC leader will
succeed Thabo Mbeki as South African president next year.
Hundreds gathered
across the street from the court and rallied in support, hoping to stop state prosecutors
from putting Zuma on trial later this year.
Gunter Simmermacher of South Africa’s
Catholic Weekly, the Southern Cross, told us more.
