Karadzic to Defend Himself at UN War Crimes Tribunal
(23 July 08 - RV) Genocide suspect Radovan Karadzic intends to defend himself at the
UN War Crimes Tribunal just like his mentor, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. He
is to be handed over to the Hague sometime in the next week, where he will be asked
to enter pleas to the 11 charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. 63
year old Karadzic declared independence for Bosnian Serbs in 1991, sparking the 1992-1995
Bosnian war. He has also been indicted for the massacre of up to 8,000 mainly-Muslim
Bosniaks at Srebrenica in 1995. Bosnian Muslim Kemal Pervanic spent 7 months in
the notorious Omarska concentration camp in Bosnia during the War. He told Lydia
O’ Kane about his experience in the camp and his fear that today’s generation of Bosnian
and Serbian youth are unaware of the atrocities carried out by Karadic that set neighbour
against neighbour:
