G8 Calls for Sanctions Against Zimbabwe, UN Unsure
(09 July 08 -RV) And while the G8 has agreed to impose sanctions against members of
the Zimbabwean government, the United Nations Security Council faces considerable
opposition to imposing similar sanctions. A vote on a US-sponsored draft resolution
calling for sanctions against President Robert Mugabe's regime is expected later this
week by the UN Security Council. However, Denis Benton of Zimbabwe Vigil told us that
a UN resolution is unlikely.
