Deadly Landslides in Bangladesh Show Climate Change
(3 July 08-RV) Landslides triggered by monsoon rains killed at least nine people today
in a third day of flooding in Bangladesh. Most of the victims were children, who were
sleeping in their mud-and-straw huts when earth slid down the hills and buried the
residences. Meanwhile in the capital Dhaka, environment ministers from the South
Asian regional grouping, Saarc, have gathered to discuss a plan to tackle climate
change. Rising seas, melting glaciers, floods and cyclones put millions of people
at risk in South Asia, and Bangladesh is proposing the creation of a joint fund to
help communities adapt to the changing climate.Cassie Dummet is the Programme Manager
