A roadside bomb exploded near a crowded passenger bus during
rush hour traffic in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo this morning, killing 20 people
and wounding 47. The government blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)
for the blast. Meanwhile, an explosion in a commuter bus in the central Sri Lanka
town of Polgolla injured at least six people. In a speech to the new Sri Lankan
ambassador to the Holy See last week, Pope Benedict XVI decried such “arbitrary attacks…which
place the innocent in harm’s way”.
Archbishop Oswald Gomis of Colombo spoke
with Emer McCarthy about the escalation of civilian casualties in the war and the
Pope’s words of encouragement to people of his country.
