Corpus Christi Procession Recalls 'Flight of the Earls'


(22 May 08-RV) In just under and hour from now, Pope Benedict will celebrate mass in the Basilica of St John Lateran here in Rome to mark the feast of Corpus Christi. The Holy Father will then led a procession to the Basilica of St Mary Major. This years journey will recall the 400th anniversary of the “Flight of the Earls” which saw a group of Irish nobleman flee Ireland for Rome.These men were given the honour in 1608 of carrying the canopy at this ceremony and this evening seminarians and deacons from the Pontifical Irish College here in Rome will re-enact this event. We spoke to one of the Irish deacons who will participate in the Corpus Christi procession with the Pope, Colin Crossey. RealAudioMP3
