Turkish Court Mulls Shut Down Of Ruling Party


(01 Apr 08 - RV) Turkey's top court agreed yesterday to hear a petition to shut down the ruling AK Party and bar the prime minister from office, in a case centred on the government's bid to relax the rules against wearing the Islamic headscarf.


Seculartists fear the ruling AKP is trying to move Turkey toward rule by Islamic law, while the ruling party argues the case against it is an attack on democracy.
