Pope appoints Fr. Henry D’Souza as new bishop of Bellary


(March 15, 2008) Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday appointed a new bishop to the diocese of Bellary, in southern India’s Karnataka state. The new bishop is Fr. Henry D’Souza, the 58-year old executive secretary of the Media Office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, CBCI. Bellary diocese has been without a bishop since Nov. 17, 2006, following the death of Bishop Joseph D’Silva. Born on Sept. 9, 1949 at Kinnigoly, Fr. Henry D’Souza studied theology at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Mangalore. He was ordained priest on May 5, 1976 for Mangalore diocese. He has held important posts at the diocesan, state and national levels of the Church in India, and since 2000 has been the secretary of the CBCI commission for Social Communications.
