( 21 Feb 08 – RV) East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta was slowly being returned
to consciousness today by doctors who have kept him sedated since he was shot in an
assassination attempt last week. Ramos-Horta has undergone surgery five times since
the shooting by suspected rebels in the East Timorese capital of Dili on Feb. 11.
An hour later, gunmen attacked Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, who escaped unhurt. We
spoke to Sister Joan Westblade who is working in East Timor with the Australia based
Mary McKillop Institute. She told us more about the current situation in the country…
