Faith-Based Groups Faith-Based Groups Key in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
(15 Feb 08-RV) A Forum on Human Trafficking in Vienna sponsored by the United Nations
Global Initiative to fight human trafficking concludes today. In his address to conference
participants, Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, secretary of the Pontifical Council
for Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, said that the human trafficking is the "most shameful
phenomena of our era." and underscored that women and children are its’ most vulnerable
victims. We spoke with Troel Vester, spokesperson for the United Nations Office
on drug and crime. He said the role of faith based groups, including the Church is
essential in any effort to combat the problem of human trafficking.
