Pope Benedict Marks the End of Christian Unity Octave
(25 Jan 08 – RV) Pope Benedict XVI will travel south of the Tiber this evening to
the basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. There he will mark the end of the Christian
Unity Octave in an ecumenical celebration of evening prayer. Among those attending
is the Anglican Archbishop of York, John Sentamu. He spoke to us about his expectations
of Christian unity.
“I think my expectations are those great words of Pope
John Paul II, who said we are looking for unity, which is not an absorption or takeover
of other churches but actually a meeting in Jesus Christ, where each one is valued
each one is important. So it was that sort of ecumenism that he was always taking
about. Actually what we need is to meet in the Gospel, to meet in Truth, and not
try to absorb other people into our arrangements”. Hear more
