(16 Jan. 2008): Pope Benedict XVI has appointed as Bishop of Nasik in India’s western
State of Maharashtra, – Msgr. Felix Machado, who is currently the Deputy Secretary
of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue. Born 6th.June,
1948 in the Archdiocese of Bombay, he completed his High School studies in this archdiocese
and his philosophical studies in St. Pius Seminary, Goregaon, also in the same Archdiocese
in 1969. The following year, he left for France for his theological studies at Lyon’s
Catholic University. During his stay there from 1972-1976, he joined the Taizè Community
in 1970, where he lived for 7 years. Ordained priest 30 Oct. 1976, he served initially
in the Archdiocese of Bombay and later – in 1998 at the newly erected Dioceses of
Vasai. After his ordination, he rendered service in various places - first as
Vicar of St. Francis Xavier ‘s Church in Giriz, Vasai from 1976-1977; then as Chaplain
at Hosftra University in New York, U.S. from 1980- 1984. During this period he also
studied at Maryknoll School of Theology, where he obtained his Master’s degree, and
later obtained his doctorate in Philosophy at Fordham University. From 1985-1993,
he lectured as Prof. of Dogmatic Theology and World Religions in the Diocesan Seminary
of Bombay. Since the year 2000, he has been serving as Deputy Secretary of the Pontifical
Council for Inter-religious Dialogue. The Diocese of Nasik has an area of 57.532
square kms. and a total population of a little over 20 million (20.295.000) inhabitants,
of which some 86 thousand 750 are Catholics. It has 33 parishes. Nasik Diocese was
lying vacant since the retirement of Bishop Thomas Bhalerao 31st March,
2007..
