of the Universal Church, after his election on 19th April in 2005. It was
on April 19th that just after 4th ballot of the conclave Cardinal

the doors of St. Peter’s balcony opened. The Cardinal who became Pope took the name
as Benedict XVI. Greeting the huge mass of pilgrims from the balcony, Pope Benedict
XVI said, “Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II, the Cardinals
have elected me, a simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord… Two years from
then the Pontiff has worked tirelessly in carrying out his work entrusted to him by
the Lord. In the joy of the Risen Lord he has moved forward more than 1.2 billion
Catholics all over the world, with confidence and God’s unfailing help.
