In south Indian state of Kerala Rights Activist nun chosen for Justice Iyer Human
Rights Award
(21 Dec. 2006) : In south Indian state of Kerala, Sister Alice Lukose, the rights
activist nun and founder of Women's Initiative Network (WIN), has been chosen as the
recipient of the Justice Krishna Iyer Human Rights Award-2006. Sister Lukose has done
remarkable work in the arena of welfare of women and children. Through the network
of WIN, Sr. Lukose has empowered women and children of over 12,000 families belonging
to the fishing community in Kerala's Alapuzha and Ernakulam districts during the last
16 years. However, her organization WIN has also undertaken thrift and credit operations,
community health programmes, capacity building, seminars, training campaigns, on social
and gender issues, etc. Sr. Lukose would be felicitated at a function to be held in
Cochin, Kerala at Justice Iyer's residence on Friday December 22nd. The
award would be presented to her by none other than Justice Rajinder Sachar, well known
Human Rights Activist and former Chief Justice of India who headed the recent Sachar
committee.
