(29 Sept 06 - RV) Years of violence in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region escalated this
week but top un officials say the world body must abandon efforts to pressure Sudan
to accept un peacekeepers. UN Sudan envoy, Jan Pronk, says the existing African Union
force should instead be strengthened. Also this week, the European Parliament passed
a strongly-worded resolution calling on all parties to put an end to military activity
in the region. The resolution was written by Simon Conveney, an MEP from Ireland.
