Slain Bishop Remembered


(25 Sept., 2006 -RV-) Ten years ago last month, gunmen shot and killed Dominican Bishop Pierre Claverie in Algeria. The bishop's death came at a turbulent moment in the country's history, when islamists poised to win elections failed to gain power. Journalists, teachers, critics and Christians, including 7 Trappist monks, were among the 150,000 people who perished in the widespread violence. A fellow Dominican, Fr.
