Work for the greater good of the family of nations" says Holy See's Permanent Observer
to UN .
(12 Sept.2006): -"Holy See’s Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer to the United
Nations.- Archbishop Celestino Migliore , called on all attending the Prayer Service
on the occasion of the opening of the 61st Session of the UN General Assembly
in New York on 11th September, to work for the greater good of the family
of nations. “It is a privilege God has entrusted to us”, Archbishop Migliore told
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and important leaders, who attended the prayer
service in the Church of the Holy Family. He praised all the efforts made to build
the capacity, working mechanisms, institutions of the UN, and above all its willingness
to stand with the people of the world and put its resources at their service. But
for these tools to be really effective , he said, they require something more -
they need human minds and hearts together with a firm political will to make them
productive. This is the reason for this prayer gathering , he added. Archbishop Migliore
also read the message sent in Pope Benedict’s name for this occasion. The Pontiff,
currently on a visit to his homeland Bavaria, acknowledged in his message the
progress made in the past year, towards a more effective presence and activity of
the United Nations organisation, in the areas of global peacekeeping and the protection
of human rights. The papal message hoped that the review of the organisation’s structures,
undertaken on the occasion of the anniversary of its founding, will result in an increased
practical commitment to meeting the needs and aspirations of the peoples of the
developing world. The message sent in the Pontiff’s name by Vatican Secretary of
State , Cardinal Angelo Sodano said : “The Holy Father prays that they will be sustained
in their efforts to build a future of justice, freedom and peace for the whole human
family”.
