(07 Sept 06 - RV) Here at the Vatican, concern is being expressed for the critical
immigration situation in Spain. Almost 900 African migrants reached the Canary
islands by boat yesterday, a record number for a single day. This comes after 1,400
arrived over the weekend alone. Already, more than 20,000 migrants, mostly from Sub-Saharan
Africa, have arrived on the islands this year - double the previous annual record.
But the Spanish Government has said it will not tolerate the continued arrival
of African Migrants on its shores and are calling it the worst humanitarian crisis
to occur in their country since the 1930’s civil war. Secretary of the Pontifical
Council for Migrants and Itinerant peoples, Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, told us
that it would be better to help these people than hinder them. He then went onto
describe what the Spanish Church is doing to help these asylum seekers…
