(16 Aug 2006-RV) August 16th 2005. World youth day celebrations have just opened in cologne, Germany. Pope Benedict was preparing to attend the gathering, undertaking his first journey outside of Italy since his election. Amid all the excitement the news of a tragic event suddenly brought a note of sadness to young and old alike.

The 90 year old brother roger Shultz founder and leader of the Taize ecumenical community in France had been stabbed and killed by a mentally ill woman at the church of reconciliation where he was leading evening prayer.
