(28 May 2005- RV) A United Nations conference to review the Nuclear Non Proliferation
Treaty has ended in deadlock between nations with nuclear arsenals, and those wishing
to develop technology to permitt their production. The 188 nations who signed the
original treaty, held a month long meeting in New York to discuss the future of the
accord. Under the original agreement drawn up at the height of the Cold War in the
1970's, nations with nuclear arsenals-The United States, Russia, France, Britan and
China - agreed to progressive disarmament in return for pledges from other countries
not to develop nuclear technology. Canadian senator Douglas Roche is a member of
the Holy See's delegation to the conference. He spoke to Philippa Hitchen about the
outcome.
