The announcement of the Pope’s death was made to the tens of thousands of people huddled in St Peter’s square, byCardinal Angelo Sodano.
Pilgrims from Rome and beyond had converged on the Vatican basilica to accompany the pope in his last hours with a candlelit vigil.
