Sierra Leone: German Ambassador visits mudslide victims

As part of activities to mark the German National Day celebrations, Germany's  Ambassador in Sierra Leone, His Excellency Mr. Wolfgang Wiethoff on 3 Oct.  joined the Caritas Freetown emergency response  team on a visit to show solidarity with the victims of the 14 August mudslide. During the morning visit, the ambassador handed over some food and non-food items, including school materials to the affected families. The embassy has a long history of collaboration with Caritas Sierra Leone and is one of the trusted partner organizations in programmes that target especially the poorest of the poor, the  venerable  and the  marginalized.

Germany was divided into a capitalist west and communist east after World War II. The country was re-unified on 3 Oct., 1990, less than a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 Nov., 1989.

The national Caritas in Sierra Leone and Caritas Freetown were amongst the first responders after torrential rain brought floodwaters tearing down from Mount Sugar Loaf in the Regent area near Freetown on 14 August. An estimated 500 people are believed to have perished in the mudslide which also destroyed houses and left thousands homeless.
