Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil soon to get Mother Teresa award


Fr. Tom, recently freed after 18 months captivity in Yemen,  has been named this year’s recipient of the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice by Harmony Foundation Mumbai.   

Abraham Mathai, founder of Harmony Foundation said Fr. Tom exemplifies the year’s theme “Compassion Beyond Borders – a compassionate response to the refugee crisis”.   Fr. Tom he said continued to work at a place of great danger despite having had the chance to leave the country. 

The award will be conferred on December 10 in Mumbai.   

Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil  who was kidnapped by suspected Islamic terrorists in March 2016 during an attack on a home for the elderly run by Missionaries of Charity nuns in Aden, was released on Sept. 28.

The Harmony Foundation Mumbai which has  recognized Fr. Tom’s dedication and commitment towards working in a place of great danger where his colleagues were murdered in cold blood, was created in October 2005 to spread the ideas of peace, dialogue and community aid without distinction of religion, caste, belief, gender or ethnicity.(UCAN)
