Ecuador's bishops call for transparency in elections


(Vatican Radio) As Ecuador’s general election got under way, the Catholic Bishops conference of Ecuador issued a statement to the media, calling on the country’s political authorities to “Collaborate with the truth and publish, in a timely manner, the will of the Ecuadorian people.”

In a statement issued on 20th February, the Bishop’s conference reminded all political authorities in Ecuador that “The final results of any popular election must always reflect the virtues of justice and the value of transparency.”

According to the Bishops conference, these values are the fundamental base of all civil coexistence and help to foster trust and confidence.

“Also in these days, they are still the just aspirations of the Ecuadorian people, who do not wish to be defrauded.

The statement was issued Ecuadorian citizens began voting in their Presidential elections. At the time of writing, most of the votes had been counted, with the former Vice President Lenin Moreno, securing 39.1% of the votes.  Mr Moreno requires 40% of the votes in order to claim victory and avoid a run-off election, against his conservative opponent Guillermo Lasso. The announcement of the results may take up to three days.

The Bishops conference statement concludes with a prayer for the country, calling for “Peace, unity and solidarity, with all government workers dedicating themselves to the common good of the population, promoting truth, justice, progress and brotherhood.”
