Bektashi leader: a 'marvelous' encounter with Pope Francis

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis received the worldwide leader of the Bektashi Order, Edmond Brahimaj, on Wednesday. The Bektashi Baba are an offshoot of Sufism – a movement within Sunni Islam that seeks a spiritual interpretation of the religion and has a tradition of mysticism – that began in the Ottoman Empire and is based primarily in Tirana, Albania.

Like all religious groups, the Bektashi faced brutal and systematic repression under the Communist regime that ruled the country from the end of World War II until 1990.

Brahimaj told Vatican Radio he was most pleased with the meeting. “It was a marvelous encounter,” Brahimaj said in an exclusive interview with Vatican Radio’s Sergio Centofanti. Brahimaj also explained that he and the Holy Father together re-affirmed their commitment to dialogue and fraternal encounter, and reiterated the importance of the presence of religious communities within contemporary society.
