CAPP Foundation to host major conference on refugees
(Vatican Radio) The Centesimus annus – pro Pontifice Foundation has organized a major international conference to take place May 12-14, to mark the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s watershed encyclical on politics, economics, and society one hundred years after his predecessor, Leo XIII’s seminal social encyclical, Rerum novarum.
The gathering of leaders in commerce, industry, charity, relief, reconciliation, and peacebuilding will be exploring the theme: “Business Initiative in the Fight Against Poverty: The Refugee Emergency, our Challenge” in the Vatican for three days starting May 12th.

LOOKING IN TO THE FUTURE
CENTESIMUS ANNUS ENCYCLICAL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
On May 1, 1991, 100 years after the Rerum Novarum encyclical by Leon XIII, Saint John Paul II published his Centesimus Annus encyclical. On June 5, 1993, the same Pope established the Centesimus Annus pro Pontifice Foundation, a lay-led, Vatican based organization to promote informed knowledge of the social teachings of the Church among qualified and socially motivated business and professional leaders. “The Centesimus Annus encyclical is a ground-breaking document which opened a new age in Catholic thinking about the market economy at the service of human development”, said Domingo Sugranyes Bickel, Chairman of the Centesimus Annus pro Pontifice Foundation on the occasion of the encyclical’s 25th anniversary; and he added “This encyclical has looked at the past, but above all it was directed to the future, as written at the end of the document by Saint John Paul II, who considered the Church’s social teachings as a form of evangelization”.
“The work of the Foundation is a service to the Church which we try to perform as lay people, essentially through a demanding and realistic dialogue among specialists in Catholic teaching, economists, social science specialists and professional people from the real economic world. We always try to understand how to apply Church teachings, not just in business firms, but also in the economy as a whole” Domingo Sugranyes Bickel added.
To reach this aim the CAPP Foundation organizes a variety of conferences and learning activities with one common denominator: it is a meeting place for Catholic Doctrine specialists, economic and social scientists, and people from business. These meetings offer opportunities to walk on a road towards personal reflection and conversion.
Following Pope Francis’ call, the forthcoming international CAPP Conference (Vatican, May 12-14 2016) will draw on “Business Initiative in the Fight Against Poverty.
