FARC proposes peace zones

(Vatican Radio) The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as the FARC, are proposing Peace Zones where their armed guerillas could be monitered by international organzations, as the beginning of the end of their militancy.

Listen to James Blears' report

FARC negotiators in Havana, Cuba say their heavily armed fighters would be willing to go to specifically designated PEACE ZONES,  as an important de-escalation of the confict.   But, only provided these locations are supervised by organizations including: The United Nations, The Unión of South American Nations and the Organization of American States.

Part of the overall Peace negotiations  process, which is now in its third year, is the disarming of the FARC,  and their transformation into a political party. Other segments still under discussion include compensation for victims of  the fifty year conflict, and independent ratification of a complex yet conclusive overall peace agreement.

Another smaller guerrilla group- The National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, has not joined this peace process, but they  have had preliminary talks with the Colombian Government.
