Papal visit expected to unite Kenyans

The Catholic Church in Kenya expects the visit of Pope Francis to unite the people in the country.

Addressing the media at the Catholic Secretariat on 16 October, Homabay Diocese Bishop, Philip Anyolo who is the Chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) invited all Kenyans to take the papal visit as a wonderful gift from God to them.

Kenya is a country that has had more than its share of terrorist attacks, endemic corruption and divisive ethnic politics that in 2007 culminated into serious post-election violence. Bishop Anyolo expressed the hope that the Papal visit would bring Kenyans together.

In the meantime, preparations to receive the Holy Father are now advanced. Bishop Anyolo confirmed that the Church through the steering committee for the Papal visit and working together with the Kenyan government were now looking into various aspects of the visit since the main plan was now in place. The Kenyan government in particular wishes to ensure adequate security for all during the visit of Pope Francis.

Speaking at the same time, coordinator of the steering committee Fr. Dr. Stephen Okello revealed that the Holy Father would meet with Muslims, Traditionalists, Hindus and Christians from various denominations under the umbrella of interreligious dialogue.

While in Kenya, the Pope will also meet young people who are often targeted by Muslim radicals for recruitment. “He will meet the youth who are victims of recruitment, encourage them to direct their energy and enthusiasm in the right direction,” Dr. Okello added.  

Among the highlights of Pope Francis’ visit will be the Holy Mass where more than a million people from different parts of the country and neighbouring countries are expected to attend.
