Canada elects Trudeau as new PM

(Vatican Radio) Canada has a new prime minister after the Liberal Party’s Justin Trudeau, son of former PM Pierre Trudeau, was elected by a 19 Oct parliamentary majority election.

Trudeau replaces incumbent conservative leader Stephen Harper, who served as the nation’s PM for ten years.

The Liberal Party leader was elected as Canada’s PM by 184 parliamentary votes out of 338.

At 43, Trudeau is the second youngest PM in Canadian history.

Trudeau’s father, the late Pierre Trudeau, served as Canada’s PM from 1968 to 1984 with a short interim in between.
